Color Management is the most critical and often most misunderstood step in digital video production. If you shoot a video on a Sony camera in S-Log3 and view it on a standard computer monitor, it will look flat, gray, and desaturated.
You could manually add contrast and saturation until it looks normal, but this is mathematically destructive. The correct approach is to use Color Management.
What is Color Management?
Oraphim needs to know three pieces of information to process color accurately:
- Input Color Space: What camera captured this footage? (e.g., ARRI LogC, Sony S-Log3, REDWideGamut).
- Timeline Color Space: The massive, mathematical working space where Oraphim calculates all your nodes and adjustments.
- Output Color Space: What screen is the audience watching this on? (e.g., Rec.709 for standard web/TV, Rec.2020 for HDR).
When Oraphim knows these three things, it automatically translates the flat Log footage into a beautiful, contrast-rich image on your monitor before you even add a single color node.
Setting up OCM (Oraphim Color Managed)
To enable automatic color management for your project:
- Go to File > Project Settings.
- Navigate to the Color Management tab.
- Change the Color Science dropdown from Oraphim YRGB (unmanaged) to Oraphim Color Managed (OCM).
- Set the Automatic color management checkbox to true.
- Set your Output Color Space to Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 (this is the standard for web, YouTube, and broadcast television).
- Click Save.
Assigning Input Color Spaces
If you shot on a modern cinema camera recording RAW formats (like .R3D or .BRAW), Oraphim automatically reads the metadata and knows the Input Color Space. You have to do nothing.
If you shot on a mirrorless camera recording MP4 files in a Log profile (like Sony S-Log3 or Panasonic V-Log), the file does not contain metadata telling Oraphim how it was shot. You must tell it manually.
- Go to the Media Pool.
- Select all the clips shot on the Sony camera.
- Right-click, go to Input Color Space.
- Select Sony S-Gamut3.Cine / S-Log3.
Instantly, all of those clips will snap from flat gray to a beautiful, normalized image with accurate contrast and skin tones. You are now ready to begin the creative grading process!
