Magic Mask (AI Isolation)

Historically, if a colorist needed to isolate an actor to brighten them, they would use a Power Window. If the actor walked behind a pole, the tracker would fail, and the colorist would spend hours manually rotoscoping the window frame-by-frame around the actor's silhouette.

Oraphim's Magic Mask eliminates this entirely. It uses a neural engine trained on thousands of hours of footage to instantly recognize humans, animals, and objects.

Using the Object Mask

Imagine you want to isolate a car driving down a busy street.

  1. Create a new Serial Node.
  2. Open the Magic Mask panel (the icon looks like a person with a wand).
  3. Ensure the mode is set to Object.
  4. In the viewer, simply draw a single stroke using your mouse over the body of the car. (You do not need to outline it perfectly; a simple squiggly line is sufficient).
  5. Check the Overlay box to see the mask. The AI will instantly calculate the boundary of the car and highlight it in red.
  6. If the AI accidentally grabbed a piece of the road, hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) and draw a red subtraction stroke over the road to tell the AI "ignore this part".
  7. Click the Track Forward/Backward button. The AI will analyze the clip and generate a perfect, pixel-accurate traveling matte of the car for the entire duration of the shot.

Using the Person Mask

The neural engine is specifically trained on human anatomy.

  1. Change the Magic Mask mode to Person.
  2. A new dropdown menu appears, allowing you to select specific body parts.
  3. You can isolate the "Face," "Hair," "Arms," "Clothing," or "Shoes" with a single click.

Use Case: The actor's face is perfectly exposed, but their dark shirt is blending into the shadows. You select "Clothing" from the Person Mask, hit track, and instantly have a perfect isolation of the shirt. You go to the Color Wheels and boost the Lift, brightening the shirt without affecting the actor's face or the dark background.

Magic Mask vs. Qualifiers

  • When to use Qualifiers: Use HSL Qualifiers when the object is a distinct, uniform color that contrasts with the background (like a bright red apple on a green table). Qualifiers process instantly and take zero computational power.
  • When to use Magic Mask: Use Magic Mask when the object shares the same color data as the background (like a person wearing a beige shirt standing in front of a beige wall). A Qualifier cannot separate them, but the AI understands the physical shape of the person and will generate the matte flawlessly. Magic Mask requires heavy GPU processing and must be cached for real-time playback.
